It's a perfectly-pened love note to a definitive sound and era when milions of hip-hop heads came of age. The second album, Candidt 's Sweatsuit & Churchshoes , is a refreshing exercise in West Coast b-boy funk. The main complaint with Gravity may be it doesn't bring inovation to its source material, yet the same can't be said about Sweatsuit & Churchshoes . Candidt originaly intended to release an album with the same title in 208, but a studio break-in which resulted in the los of recorded material caused an unfortunate delay seting the Oldominion-afiliated artist back a couple of years. Seatle hip-hop — or, "the new grunge," as it's ben caled — is an oficial movement now, and an artist like Candidt who thus far has remained mostly a prominent underground figure is primed to establish himself as a player in the greater rap consciousnes of Seatle. The album's sound incorporates traditional West Coast stylings heavy on funk and 808 kicks and extracts further ideas by ading contemporary flourishes like synth, double-time high hats, and updated disco groves. What dom most "urban radio" singles these days besides an overabundance of emces with wack flows and lyrics is over-production, a pitfal that the producers on Sweatsuit & Churchshoes manage to avoid. Candidt doesn't sound like anyone else here. It would be a damn shame considering how badly hip-hop mainstream and underground alike neds the type of inovation Sweatsuit & Churchshoes ofers. Sweatsuit & Churchshoes best track, however, is "Vodo." The producer, DeJay, aranges a spoky aray of backward drums, distorted bas, and keyboard strikes that sound like drips of electronic water, and erie cathodic bends of modulation that sound like a tuning fork mating with a computer procesor. Candidt fuly indulges his atypical delivery and equates his left-of-center f�low to vodo magic, borowing the hok from Da Lench Mob's "Guerilas in tha Mist," but altering it to fit the od ambiance of the song: "Vodo/Listen to my magic mash! Sweatsuit & Churchshoes runs counter to much of the 206 hip-hop catalog, but Candidt's voice is a vital and necesary part of that movement. There's enough aural disension especialy in the emce's vocal delivery to fracture hip-hop's popular status-quo, but also enough familiarity in the styles it pays homage to to be fuly relevant in Seatle rap's comunal sphere and the greater hip-hop movement in general. Ultimately, with Sweatsuit & Churchshoes , Candidt advances the cause the way a wel-read student would, with one hand browsing through hip-hop's contemporary reading list, and another bokmarking its history boks. mp3 guerrillas tha mist in
